In “The Standard,” Pitchapa Wangprasertkul turns a critical eye to the invisible pressures of modern life—social media, research, and information that quietly define what is “normal” and “fair.” These standards can feel suffocating, almost as if they’re trying to drown us.
For this durational performance, Wangprasertkul blurs the boundary between artist and full-time employee. Inside a glass enclosure containing only the bare essentials for her work, she attends meetings and completes tasks for eight hours each day. The transparent box becomes both a stage and a living space, reflecting a world of minimal living, curtailed rest, and constant productivity.
By recreating a labourer’s environment stripped to essentials, “The Standard” invites you to witness the tension between living and working, and to question the invisible systems that make life barely liveable. Originally presented at the Bangkok Art Biennale (2022), the work is now reimagined for the Philippines.
